The conference theme this year is Millennial Learning: Teaching in the 21st Century. Just 20 years ago individuals started to purchase desktop computers, and the internet was not yet used by the public. Now, in the form of PDAs, individuals not only carry computers in the palm of their hands, they have ready access to computers being held by everyone else. Teaching at a time when students and faculty have almost limitless information available at any time creates both opportunities and challenges.

Within the overall conference theme of the Millennial Learning, we are supporting four major themes to focus our discussions: Active Learning, Teaching Well with Technology, Developing Cultural Competency, and Sustainability.

Active Learning:   Finding ways to promote learning in which students are actively involved with the course material.

Teaching Well With Technology:   Promoting integration of technology into the learning experience in a way that actually benefits the student and assists with the long-term retention of information.

Developing Cultural Competency:   We all now live in a global environment, and at this time it is imperative that we learn to identify and understand cultural perspectives other than our own.

Sustainability:   Global climate change and sustainability issues will no doubt dominate the landscape in the coming years. This track is devoted to our roles and responsibilities in higher education with respect to sustainability.

Description:

The 28th International Conference will emphasize the art of teaching for intellectual engagement. The intellectually engaged student:

  • takes ownership of content through actively thinking it through.
  • values questions more than answers
  • seeks understanding over rote memorization
  • assesses thinking for its clarity, accuracy, precision, relevance, depth, breadth, logic, and significance
  • seeks to identify key structural components in thinking (purposes, question at issue, information and data, , inferences and interpretations, concepts and theories, assumptions and presuppositions, implications and consequences, points of view and frames of reference
  • reads, writes, listens, and speaks critically
  • questions the thinking of others and expects his or her thinking to be questioned by others
  • thinks for himself while respecting and empathically entering the point of view of others
  • locates ultimate intellectual authority in evidence and reasoning, rather than in authority figures or "authoritative" beliefs or texts Under (well-designed) instruction, students learn how to analyze thinking, assess thinking, and re-construct thinking (improving it thereby). The thinking focused upon is that which is embedded in the content of established academic disciplines. As a result, students so taught become actively engaged in thinking historically, anthropologically, sociologically, politically, chemically, biologically, mathematically, ...

Evaluating Faculty Performance in the Classroom: Conference Charlotte, NC: June 23, 2008 to June 25, 2008. https://www.academicimpressions.com/conferences/0608-ev ...
Contact: ai-events@conferencesdirect.net
Description:

Overview
While dealing with increasing institutional constraints, many colleges and universities are experiencing calls for increased accountability with regard to teaching quality and student outcomes. It can be difficult to assess, let alone improve, the quality of teaching without a thorough understanding of the process of faculty evaluation.

Join us to learn how to best support the development of your faculty and student learning by designing a comprehensive formative evaluation system. You will learn:

  • How to effectively evaluate faculty in-class teaching performance
  • How to collect valid and reliable data from peer observation, student ratings, and faculty self assessment
  • How to create and use rubrics for peer review
  • Steps for developing effective course questionnaires
  • Ideas about various technologies that can be used for self assessment, student ratings/course questionnaire, and peer observation
  • How to integrate these factors into a plan for better teaching performance in the classroom

Conference Format:
The conference is structured to balance information sharing, targeted learning activities, group work, and collaboration with colleagues. We will focus on the real world application of everything you learn.

You will explore tangible examples of projects and best practices from other institutions and leave with rubrics and other tools that you can put to use as soon as you get back to your campus.

Expand your assessment knowledge with two extra workshops:

  • Developing and Evaluating Teaching Portfolios – Identify the key components of the teaching portfolio and explore a process for portfolio development.
  • Using Faculty Evaluation Results for Development & Support – Explore ways to use faculty evaluation data to go beyond simply rewarding and punishing performance. We will cover ways to gather information for developing new teaching strategies and practices, as well as ways to document and share teaching innovations.

What others are saying
“Mike Theall is clearly an expert in the field of faculty teaching evaluation. He was an excellent presenter with rigorous research-based content that was still accessible for an audience with a variety of backgrounds.”

Kristin Croyle – Assistant Dean, College of Social and Behavior Sciences, University of Texas – Pan America
